Episode 27: What's wrong with Jayson Tatum's shot?

Jayson Tatum has been struggling when shooting from the perimeter for the past 18 months. He was inconsistent throughout the 2023-24 season, and had issues in the 2022-23 postseason. Tatum was once seen as a pure scoring threat, who could light up any defense from every level of the floor.

However, Tatum’s game has evolved. He’s no longer a pure scorer. Instead, he’s one of the most complete players in the world. He thrives when driving the lane. It is among the most dangerous post-players on the planet. He’s also a high-level pick-and-roll creator — both for himself and others and is an elite help defender.

Nevertheless, it’s always easier to focus on what somebody can’t do or is struggling to do rather than what they excel at.

Tatum is currently with Team USA, playing in front of an international audience. Since joining Steve Kerr's team, he has been 0-for-7 from the perimeter, which has led to a lot of criticism.

That’s why, in today’s episode, Tim Shiels and I discussed Tatum’s shooting struggles before trying to figure out why they’re occurring and whether they even matter when he can do so many other things.
